Sri Lanka’s busy commercial capital — markets, temples, colonial buildings and sunset on Galle Face Green.

Colombo is where most journeys in Sri Lanka begin and end. It is a working city rather than a resort, but it rewards a day of exploring: the crowded lanes of Pettah, Buddhist and Hindu temples, colonial-era buildings in Fort, and a sunset among families and food stalls on Galle Face Green.

Our office is in Mirihana, Nugegoda, in Colombo’s suburbs — so this is our home city.

Top things to do

  1. 01

    Galle Face Green at sunset

Tip: Go in the late afternoon for street food stalls along the seafront.

Tip: Best explored on foot in the morning, before the midday heat.

  3. 03

    Gangaramaya Temple

Tip: Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.
