The 5th-century rock fortress rising from the plains — Sri Lanka’s most famous sight.

Sigiriya is a rock fortress and palace built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, rising sharply from the surrounding forest. The climb passes ancient frescoes, a mirror wall and the giant lion’s paws before reaching the palace ruins on the summit. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the centrepiece of the Cultural Triangle.
01
Tip: Start at opening time to avoid the heat and crowds; there are many steps.
02
Tip: A shorter, rougher climb with a view of Sigiriya itself — popular at sunrise.
03
Tip: A gentle half-day by bullock cart or boat.

Sigiriya is the historic site with frescoes and the palace ruins on top. Pidurangala is a separate, rougher climb nearby with a view of Sigiriya. Many visitors do both.
