Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka: Coast by Coast, Month by Month
Two monsoons mean Sri Lanka is always in season somewhere. Which coast, hills and parks to choose for every month of the year.

The short answer: Sri Lanka is always in season somewhere. Two monsoons hit the island at different times of year, so when one coast is wet, the other is usually dry.
The two main seasons
| Region | Best time (roughly) | Rain (roughly) |
|---|---|---|
| West & south coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota) | December–April | May–September (south-west monsoon) |
| Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) | December–April | May–September |
| East coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Arugam Bay) | April/May–September | October–January |
| Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa) | Much of the year | October–January (north-east monsoon); hottest March–May |
Seasonal highlights
- Whale watching: Mirissa roughly November–April; Trincomalee roughly May–October.
- Surfing: Arugam Bay roughly May–October.
- Kandy Esala Perahera: July/August — exact dates follow the lunar calendar and are announced each year.
