Money

The currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels; carry cash for small shops and tuk-tuks.

Visiting temples

  • Cover shoulders and knees.
  • Remove shoes and hats before entering.
  • Never pose for a photo with your back to a Buddha statue.

Poya days

Every full moon (Poya) is a public holiday. Alcohol sales are restricted, and temples are busy with worshippers dressed in white.

On the road

Driving is on the left. Most visitors hire a car with a driver — see how to travel around Sri Lanka.

Emergency numbers

  • Police: 119
  • Ambulance (Suwa Seriya): 1990
  • Tourist Police: {{TODO: confirm current number before publishing}}
